Buying graded cards
A graded card has been authenticated, evaluated for condition, and sealed in a tamper-evident case by a grading company such as PSA. The number on the label is the grade.
That gives you two things. It confirms the card is real, and it tells you the condition in a way that is comparable to other cards.
You can check the cert. Every PSA slab has a certification number. You can look it up on the grader's website and confirm it matches the card and the label. We're happy to do it with you before you buy.
Same card, different grade. A PSA 9 and a PSA 10 of the same card can sell for very different prices. Ask what the grade means for the card you're looking at.
Our PSA Graded Cards page explains more.
Buying raw (ungraded) cards
Raw cards cost less than graded versions in most cases, and they're a good choice if you collect for enjoyment, or plan to grade them yourself.
Look at the card in person. Check the corners, the edges, the surface for scratches, and how well the image is centered. It's easier to judge in person than in a photo, which is one of the reasons to buy from a local store.
What to ask any card seller
- Is the card graded? By whom, and can I check the cert?
- What is the condition, and are there any flaws?
- Has it been trimmed, recolored or altered? (This is a real problem in the hobby, especially with vintage cards.)
You should always be able to get straight answers.
