How silver and platinum are valued
The base value is simple. It comes from three things.
- 01
Purity
How much of the item is actual silver or platinum.
- 02
Weight
Metal is priced by weight, commonly in troy ounces. One troy ounce is about 31.1 grams.
- 03
The market price that day
Metal prices move. We show live prices on our site.
Some items are worth more than their metal content. Collectible coins and antique pieces are examples. We look at that too.
Silver we buy
Sterling silver
Marked "925" or "Sterling." It's 92.5% silver. Flatware, serving pieces, jewelry, trays and candlesticks.
Coin silver and older US coins
Dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver. Half dollars from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver. Morgan and Peace silver dollars are also silver.
Fine silver
Marked ".999." Bars, rounds and coins such as American Silver Eagles.
Silver jewelry
Bracelets, chains, rings and other pieces marked 925.
Platinum we buy
Platinum jewelry. Wedding bands, engagement ring settings, chains and bracelets. Marks to look for: "PLAT," "PT," "950," "900."
Platinum and diamond pieces. Platinum is often used to hold diamonds. We evaluate the metal and the stones separately. See Sell Diamonds.
Platinum is heavier than gold and silver, so it feels dense in the hand. It is not the same as white gold, which is gold alloyed to look silver. That's a common mix-up. The stamp usually tells them apart.
What is not worth its weight in silver
This is the part most buyers skip. Not everything that looks silver has metal value.
Silver plate. Items marked "silverplate," "EPNS" or "plated" have a thin silver layer. Very little metal value.
Weighted sterling. Some sterling candlesticks, handles and bases are hollow and filled with another material. The weight on a scale isn't all silver. We account for that.
Stainless and nickel. They can look like silver but are not.
We'll tell you what you have. If a piece is plated, we'll say so.
How selling works
- 01
Bring your items
No need to sort or clean them. Please don't polish sterling before you come. Tarnish doesn't reduce metal value.
- 02
We test and weigh
We check the marks and verify the metal and weigh the pieces.
- 03
You get an offer
We explain how it was calculated. You decide.
Tips before you sell
- Bring everything in one visit. Mixed lots are fine.
- Keep sets together. Complete flatware sets in a known pattern can be worth more than the metal.
- Point out coins. Some older coins carry a collector premium over silver value.
- Bring paperwork, if you have any.
