Why a guitar is good collateral
A guitar isn't just wood and wire. Many hold value for decades, and some go up. A good instrument from a known maker can be sold, so it's something we can lend against with confidence.
The other side of that is honesty about value. Two guitars with the same name on the headstock can be worth very different amounts. That's why we look at each instrument, not just the brand.

What determines a guitar's value
Brand and model
Fender, Gibson, Martin, Taylor, PRS, Gretsch, Rickenbacker, Epiphone and Ibanez each occupy a different range. Within a brand, a specific model or a signature edition can matter more than the name alone.
Year and origin
Age matters, but not in a straight line. A pre-1965 Fender (before CBS bought the company) and a 1950s or early 1960s Gibson are in their own category. Made in the USA versus made overseas is also a big factor for many models.
Originality
Original pickups, tuners, bridge, pots and finish are worth more than replaced parts. Modifications often lower a vintage guitar's value. A refinish can lower it a lot.
Repairs
A repaired headstock break, neck reset, refret or cracked top can significantly reduce value, even if the guitar plays well. It's important to tell us about known damage. We'll find it anyway.
Condition
Fret wear, neck straightness, finish checking, dings, and electronics that crackle or cut out all count.
Case and paperwork
The original case, case candy, tags, receipts and documentation can add to a vintage instrument's value.
Wood and construction (acoustics)
Solid wood tops and backs are valued differently from laminate. Well-known models such as Martin dreadnoughts are examples of instruments where construction affects value.

What helps us value it faster
- The serial number, which helps date the guitar and can confirm the model
- Photos of the headstock, the back of the neck, the body edges and the electronics cavity
- A list of anything replaced, modified or repaired
- The case and any paperwork
- Do not polish, clean, or restring it just for us. Leave it as it is.
Borrow or sell?
If you plan to play this guitar again, a loan lets you keep it. If you have moved on from it, ask about selling instead. We can tell you which makes more sense.
Pawn loans have a repayment deadline. If a loan is not repaid, the guitar can be forfeited.
