Buying Pokémon cards: what to know
Base Set and first-edition cards are special. The original English Base Set was released in 1999. Cards with the "1st Edition" stamp, or the earlier "Shadowless" printing, are worth more than the standard Unlimited printing of the same card. If someone tells you a card is 1st Edition, check the stamp and the grade.
Graded is safer for high-value cards. On expensive cards, a graded slab confirms authenticity and condition. You can look up the PSA certification number on PSA's website and check it matches. We'll do it with you.
Grade matters a lot. A PSA 10 (Gem Mint) is worth much more than the same card at PSA 8 or 9. Ask what the difference is for the specific card.
Other graders exist. BGS and CGC also grade Pokémon cards. Each company has its own scale, and the market does not value them equally. Ask us to compare.
English and Japanese are not the same. They print in different quantities and are valued separately.
Be careful with sealed product. Resealed boxes are a known issue in the hobby. Buy sealed product from someone you can ask questions.
Which cards drive the market
Charizard is the best-known name, but it's not the only one. Popular Pokémon, first-edition sets, promotional cards, and modern special illustration rares from recent sets all attract collectors. The rare ones can be expensive, and demand can shift quickly when a new set comes out.
For a deeper look at what moves value, see our Pokémon Card Values page.
Buying for a kid, or as a gift
You don't need graded slabs for that. A few raw holos, a sealed pack or two, or a favorite Pokémon will do. Tell us the budget and we'll suggest options.
